Critical Illness
A critical illness or disease in insurance is a major health condition which can be fatal or life-threatening and requires immediate medical intervention. However, there is no standard definition of a critical illness. Different insurance companies use different ways to classify and categorise critical illnesses. The only way to know if a health condition is deemed a critical illness by your insurer is to look up the list specifying all the crucial illnesses in your policy document.
Regular health insurance plans in India cover all illnesses on an indemnity basis other than those specifically excluded. Critical illness insurance, specifically designed to provide financial support to people with major health conditions, covers only critical illnesses which are listed under the policy and usually pays out a lump sum benefit on the diagnosis of a listed critical illness.
Critical illness insurance provides support only in case of diagnosis of a listed critical illness. It does not cover other health issues. Hence, critical illness insurance can be used to supplement your base health insurance cover. It cannot be a replacement for your base health insurance policy.
