Durable Medical Equipment

Durable medical equipment (DME) refers to medical devices that are used repeatedly over time at home and serve a medical purpose. It includes equipment such as wheelchairs, ventilators and prosthetic devices, among others.

Typically, a standard health insurance policy does not cover the cost associated with durable medical equipment. However, some policies with extensive features now offer this coverage, with certain limitations. Some others offer it as an add-on.

Health insurance policies covering durable medical equipment usually provide a list of devices that are covered on a rental or purchase basis. Some policies require prior authorisation from the insurer for this benefit to be paid. Carefully read the terms of your policy to understand the extent of durable medical equipment coverage.
