Out-Patient Department (OPD) Treatment

Out-patient Department or OPD treatment refers to the medical care that takes place in a clinic or hospital and does not require hospitalisation. This could include doctor consultations, diagnostic tests, minor medical procedures and prescription drugs.

Regular health insurance plans in India only cover hospitalisation expenses. OPD care is excluded, and the policyholders have to manage OPD costs on their own. However, some health insurance policies offer limited OPD treatment coverage as a built-in benefit or as an add-on available at an extra cost.

You must refer to your policy document to understand the extent of your policy coverage. Also, if your policy offers OPD benefit as an optional feature, it makes sense to do the cost-benefit analysis before opting for it.
