Pre-Existing Disease (PED) | Meaning & Waiting Period
Pre-existing disease or condition in health insurance refers to any illness or health condition that a person has at the time of policy purchase. It could be a chronic disease like hypertension, diabetes, cancer, or any other health issue that the person is aware of.
The policyholder needs to disclose all the pre-existing health conditions in the policy application. It helps the insurer assess the level of risk and decide the terms of the policy.
Health insurance policies usually come with a waiting period for pre-existing conditions. The insured person has to serve a waiting period of 2 or 3 years before the coverage for pre-existing diseases becomes active. Severe or multiple pre-existing conditions can also lead to denial of coverage by the insurer.
Non-disclosure of pre-existing conditions can lead to claims being rejected or policy being terminated. You must declare all the health conditions you are aware of while purchasing your policy. Also, read the terms and conditions to understand the waiting periods or other limitations on pre-existing conditions.
