Survival Period

The survival period clause is an essential part of a critical illness insurance policy. The survival period is the minimum period an insured person must live after being diagnosed with a critical illness to be eligible for the benefit under the policy. Typically, the survival period ranges from a few days to several months, depending on the terms of the policy.

A critical illness insurance policy provides a considerable lump sum payment in case you are diagnosed with a covered critical illness. Hence, the diagnosis of illness creates a substantial liability for the insurance company. Adding a survival period clause delays the payment of the benefit amount.

If you survive this period, it indicates that the illness could be controlled, managed, or cured with the proper treatment and care. The benefit amount from the insurance policy can help you manage the cost of treatment and other expenses.

However, if you do not survive this period, the claim under your critical illness policy is not payable.

A survival period is different from a waiting period. Survival period is only applicable after you are diagnosed with a critical illness. A waiting period applies from the moment you purchase a new health insurance policy.
